I am trying to find out what is a decent mic that actors can wear in their hair that has a decent sound quality. The last few shows I have done sound for, the director rented the lavalier mics (the flat rectangle ones) and the sound quality was horrible on some of the actors. This year we are doing a production that will allow us to mic the cast on their costumes but some shows we don't have that option. As an example, we just finished a run of Cats and the only option for all but 3 characters were mics in their wigs. The sound for some of the actors was beyond awful. I have seen Broadway and touring productions where the actors use a rounded type mic - not sure what this kind is. Sorry, I am learning the audio biz and not finding many good resources out there. I know my way around the mixer and adjusting the mics. I made the mistake of purchasing ear-worn mics for two productions which worked awesome, but working with a cast of teenagers is NOT smart since between two shows they busted up every last one of them. Thanks for any help that anyone can provide. |

Greetings colugino. There are a number of good sounding mics that are appropriate for this type of usage. A few (but certainly not all) popular mics that work well in the hairline are the DPA 4060 series, Sennheiser's Gold MKE-2 (a moisture resistant version of the now classic MKE-2), and Countryman's B3/B6 lines. "Street" pricing runs from about $200 to $450ish.
