bullet Topic: Need help for teens, comedy maybe musical
    Posted: 7/01/09 at 8:13pm

I've been looking high and low for a good comedy for teens and could really use some advice. We have a relatively small cast, about 5-6 girls and 1-3 boys will be joining us next semester (assuming that no one new signs up) with ages ranging from 10 to 17.

I think I may just be asking for too much:

-A comedy, possibly a musical

-A one act, or similar in length.

-Jokes or themes that aren't too "mature" The teens are up for anything, its the parents that object.

-Jokes or themes that aren't "immature" The cast is mostly made up of older kids and the audiences are mostly made up of parents.

-No fairytales or twists on fairytales. We just did one and would really like to mix it up.

-More of an ensemble, I'd like to avoid having anyone waiting in the wings for long periods

-Can’t be too expensive

-A preview available online

If anyone has any advice, I would be very thankful!!

No problem.

I don't know of too many one-act musicals that fit your needs, but there are lots of straight plays that could work.

The publisher you want to check out is www.playscripts.com which specializes in one-acts in the high school market and also allows you to read 90% of each script on-line. They also have a good search engine which can allow you to narrow your search easily.

From my own work, check out:

!Artistic Inspiration (a good ensemble piece in which two hack writers, (can be either male or female) try to write the worst play imaginable.) Cast size 5+. You can read it online here:

and

Anna and August (less of an ensemble, 2 main female and 2 main male roles, with 4 smaller roles (could be split 3F 1M pretty easily) a romantic comedy following two kids from the age of 9 to 17.

There are thirty-three options listed here (although that will come down when you discount those with a fairytale basis).
You can read every script in full on the web site.

I direct at a small high school.   Last fall, we did Faith County by Mark Landon Smith.  It has six females (one dies in Act I) and three males.  It was close to an ensemble cast.  It's two acts, but they are short.  The set was simple.  We built a back drop because we only have a main curtain.  (We're working on getting more someday.)  You wouldn't have to build an elaborate set at all.   It's funny, a little risque here and there (for high school) but I didn't have any parents or administration come after me.  They laughed.

It's not a fairytale.  I like to steer away from those--just not my thing.  It is difficult to find comedy that high school kids in "small-town America" can perform without it being a children's play.  I do want to keep my job.  Smile

The prom commmitee served bbq as a fundraiser before the show.  It was a great time.
