Topic: help chosing first production Posted: 6/21/09 at 1:50pm |
Hi
I just started a community theater group in an area that is filled with expats (in Costa Rica), that is quite remote from many cultural activites.... We are super excited to be starting this, and our community is too; they are all very happy to finally have live theater to look forward to. I am looking for a comedy for our first production, and we have, so far, three actresses (hey, you gotta start somewhere!!!), only one of them is professional. It would be great if any of you could offer suggestions as to what our opera prima should be :) Thanks! |

Best of luck making theatre happen in CR!
My script, 'Mothers Have Nine Lives'--a whirlwind tour of the highs and lows of modern motherhood--has 12 parts, but was written to accomodate three female actors:
It's been done by professionals and students, and can be mounted on a shoestring. Running time - 50 minute. Let me know if you'd like me to email you a copy.
cheers - Joanna

If you have bilingual middle-aged actresses, a fun one is "Our Lady of the Tortilla" by Luis Santeiro. Yes, it's written by Luis of "Sesame Street" fame!!
4 women and 2 men. Interior set. Available through Dramatists.
2 men, 4 women: 6 total
THE REVIEWS: In one wild weekend, an Hispanic American family threatens to burst at the seams. The college-aged son brings home his WASPy girlfriend; his flamboyant mother goes off in mad pursuit of her straying husband, and the old aunt sees the face of the Virgin in a tortilla—turning their New Jersey home into a suburban Lourdes. "…There is nothing more hilarious than the sound of two cultures clashing in an American living room…the play piles ethnolinguistic puns on top of sight gags and camp lust so ecstatically you'd think you were back in TV's golden age." —Village Voice. "For all its farcical cleverness, this affectionate spoof…also manages to make some very sweet and serious points about the 'miracle of family love.' " —NY Post. "…revelations that dazzle and tickle at the same time." —NY Times. Book/Item: OUR LADY OF THE TORTILLA FEE: $75 per performance. |
