bullet Topic: theatre as hobby

Does anyone else consider their participation as far as cost the way their would any other hobby?

When people imply that theatre is expensive to see and to participate in, I always say it's cheaper than sailing or going to stock car races.

I just spent money this weekend on costumes and props for a musical comedy we are doing this summer and justified spending $9 to buy 7 Hawaiian shirts as just one of the costs of my "hobby."

That's a good way to look at it. I'll tell that to my husband, who's hobby is model trains, next time he asks why I'm spending our money on theatre stuff.... one of his trains probably costs as much as I spend on an entire show! Good perspective.

A simple musical hobby can cost thousands of dollars.  So does photography.

Spending a few hundred on costuming is nothing in comparison.

I can't believe I never thought about that, my husband grumbles a little about the gas money and nickel and diming that comes along with every show, but I'd bet he's spent five grand on hockey tickets, jerseys, and related knick knacks in the last five years. That's not even counting the gas money to go forty five minutes away to the nearest arena.

I love this!

I spend my money on my hobby or hobbies the way any person does.  Sometimes it's a little; sometimes it's a lot.  This is true, I think, regardless of the hobby, whether it's as a participant or as a fan/observer:
- sports
- fine art (painting, sculpture, etc.)
- performing arts
- collecting
- gardening or renovations
- traveling
- ... or whatever!
