Topic: Pics of designs for Bye Bye Birdie? Posted: 2/27/09 at 12:03am |
I've searched the internet for set ideas for BBB, but it's not been a lot of help. If anyone has done the show for community theatre, do you have any pics on-line?
Also ... if you've done the show before and have some ideas I would love to hear them. I'm directing this summer and I would like to keep the set somewhat simple. I know that are a lot of scenes and only about 2 of them are repeated. We have no front curtain to play in front of since it's a make-shift stage in a community building. I'm thinking a black backdrop and using a few levels, but without a front curtain I'm having a hard time envisioning each scene. I've got time though. TIA ... |

Hi. I am sorry it has been so long since you posted this request. I designed a production of Birdie a few years ago that was quite successful. There are photos from the show on my website. Send me an email from my website, and I will be happy to send you additional photos.
We built several steel-structure wagons, and hung various small flats and cutouts on them to create all of the different scenes. |

I was hired by a high school to direct BBB. They didn't have a set designer, but they did have a terrific (and cooperative) shop teacher. They rented the set design available from Scenographics, Inc. ( http://www.scenographics.com ) and it was a really well thought out and play-appropriate design. Since then, I've used the company twice, and both times the sets addressed issues and problems and solved them for the crew. It's well worth a look. You do need people who can build - but they don't have to "stagecraft" knowledgeable, as the plans and directions are very detailed.
