bullet Topic: Flickering candles
    Posted: 7/27/04 at 2:57pm

HI I'm currently SMing the play Fiddler on the Roof  and the director wants candles that flicker, or look to be actually lit, but we don't want actual fire on stage because we have some young children.  Does anyone have any ideas as to where we can get them from or how we can achieve that effect?

Thanks!

Check out a Christmas store or web site. They should have them.

Adding to Linda?s post.

If you can?t find them in a Christmas shop or site! You can use the smaller ones, they have for Birthday cakes. By either drilling a hole in the top of an ordinary candle & pooping the smaller candle in! Or substituting cut down white electrical conduit for the candle. The reason For this is, so you can twist the mechanical ?turn on switch? of the small candle, when you need it & turn it off later - without having to add an on/off switch!

A REAL SIMPLE solution would be to wire the cheap electric candles (you can find them in almost any "Dollar Store") in series with a flourescent starter module.  It's nothing more than a small capacitor in parallel with a small neon lamp.  The neon lamp conducts randomly with varying brightness, thus making the incandescent lamp in the candle flicker randomly.  The total cost per flickering candle should be about $1.50 each.  Since children will be around them, take care to tape up or cover up any exposed wiring to eliminate possible shock hazard.  If all this confuses you, get one of the theatre "techie" people to handle it.  It's simple!  Good luck!

We have used battery operated candles that can be purchased at AC Moore  for around $1.00 a piece for our production of Fiddler on the Roof.
