Community Theater Green Room Discussion Board: Recruiting new directors

   Our CT very nearly disbanded.  As the new president, I have more or less promised we will do a show before April 2010.

I would prefer not to direct.  I actually liked serving on the board as secretary, and working either backstage or in the booth during a show.

I would consider directing Reader's Theater, but the board is very pessimistic about this type of show.

Of the board members who have directed recently, one prefers to act (and has health problems), and the other is too busy working (and has little directing experience anyway).

We desperately need a production team, so that not everything falls on the director.  I am also considering having one of the HS kids who is directing a one-act for "Rock the Arts" direct.

Does anyone have tips on how to recruit new directors?  I am thinking we might do a Halloween show, if that matters.

	Ask. Directly. Everybody. Particularly ask theatrical friends you know, of all ages, including your CT's board members (present and past). "Would you be interested in directing a play for us?" And if the answer is no, then: "Would you suggest the name of someone you think might be interested in directing a play for us?" If you ask these questions of any/all of your theatrical friends, eventually you'll get if not a definitive answer then at least some good suggestions of people to try to nudge/wheedle/cajole into directing.

	Advertise in the arts section of the paper--hold a little reception/meeting and tell about the theatre. Directors can then (or later) submit proposals.

	Do you have a community college or university in proximity for collaboration? Put out several "artist calls" on the web (don't forget Craig's List). How about your state or county arts council? I was gonna say you could also check within your faith based community, but if you are doing a Halloween show that might not fly. What about other service organization or non-profits you could partner with. I have seen people come out of the woodwork to participate in shows that will also benefit a great cause. Of course sharing the burden of production also means sharing the profit.
