Topic: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

I am directing the play Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at our community theater. This play consists of adults and children. I would like some ideas for the set that will not cost alot to do. This is my first play to direct and I want it to be a play people will remember.

1. The Bucket Home

2. The Chocolate river

2. Tube that Augustus goes up in.

3. The boat

4. the invention room

5. nut room

6. the glass elevator

7. the tv room

We have done this

1 Buchet home simple scene black curtin with a bed

2 A shimmery brown piece fabric with two people lift and floating this w/ lights

3 Cardboard and the actor caried this

4 we made a platform high enough so our actor could slip into a clean ( brand new Local garbage can 90 gal) with wheel so the squarril could roll off the stage

7 tv room

we took a video of the actor on green screen and ran the it with screen

I assume the scene in "The Nut Room" requires a character to go down a chute... I'm not sure how the show differs from the book or movie.

When we've had to have someone do something like that, we put the "chute" against a flat or platform with a hole in it. The chute could be a garbage can with a hole cut out the back, or we made one with chicken wire framing and lined it with an old blanket so the actor didn't get cut. Wiggling your feet as you fall down the chute adds to the length illusion, also an appropriate sound effect would help. After going down the actual "chute" the actor can just crawl out the back, which will put them behind the flat or under the platform. If you use the same flat in another scene, put a plant or something in front of the hole.

1. The Bucket Home- platform with half a house can be tunred around to show outside their house
2. The Chocolate river- brown fabric waved by two techies off stage
3. Tube that Augustus goes up in.- just plexiglass held up by two stands on wheels
4. The boat- a dragon cut out on a rolling platform with benches on it
6. nut room- another 4foot by 4 foot 4 foot tall box with couch cusions inside stairs lead up to it you fall in and crouch
8. the tv room- regular sized television that is hallow have a piece of black carboard bordering the bottom inside with a ken barbie doll dressed like mike preset that grandpa joe can pull out
