Community Theater Green Room Discussion Board: Being a good critic

   Feedback.

Anything in life, any projects for work, school, etc gets feedback but how do you want to receive and give it in the community theater context?  

Who do you want it from and when?
If you are not asked for criticism do you simply give a generic "good show" just to be encouraging?  If you didn't like the show do you find something nice to say to a new director to be encouraging?  Again, only if you're not asked for a specific critique.  

Does your board specifically go out of their way to discuss the show with you after it's done to go through what worked, what didn't, what can be done more efficiently?  Or do you never hear from the board, they maintain a neutral standing because they focus on the business end of things?

	Our plays are adjudicated by the state theatre association and entered into the regional conference competitions. We get plenty of feedback LOL. I am an adjudicator, am often asked by friends for criticism. I would never ever offer it without an invitation. There is always something good to mention about a show - even if it's just "wow, they seemed to be having a really good time up there!!" I have yet to be reduced to using "well, the set didn't fall down!"
