Does anyone have any experience with any legal issues regarding selling shirts for your productions?
I know that we can't sell merchandise with the official logo on it, but if we make our own logo, can we still use the name of the show?

That's what we do. I generally end up doing the design since I do posters and the website as well.

Check with the owners of the royalty rights and your contract that you signed to produce the play. It is usually covered somewhere in the contract about merchandise and sales.

My understanding is that you may use the title of the show for promotions on t-shirts as long as your intent is the promotion of the show. If you sell t-shirts with the expectation of profit, then that becomes another matter entirely.

We do t-shirts all the time, but don't attempt to sell them beyond cast and crew.

If cast and crew family and friends want to buy shirts we'll sell to them too but when we do shirts it's made to order. We don't buy in bulk or anything. I tell our screen printer that we need X number large tees, x number medium hoodie and so on and he charges us only for the screen setups and actual printing. If we come out ahead it's usually only a few bucks because I add about .50 cents per shirt to cover mess ups.
