Topic: One Act Play for College Festival Posted: 1/26/09 at 1:03pm |
I know there are several one act forums, but I figured listing some details I am looking for would be helpful, so here goes! I am directing a show at a college one act festival this year and am looking for a show with the following specifications:
-Lasts 20-30 minutes (give or take a little) -Cast of 3-6 (dominantly women preferred) -Slightly edgy, but not so much that it would offend a south-eastern, somewhat conservative audience--innuendo is Ok, anything that could be considered "foul" is not. -Not overly complex technically, but enough to give me a good challenge. My college recently opened a new theatre with a fantastic space and I want to use it to its potential. -Preferably a comedy that is somewhat modern. Any suggestions would be very helpful and appreciated. Thanks! |

Naomi in the Living Room by Christopher Durang is a great one. (You could also do Sister Mary Ignatius explains it all...) Might be a little blue for your crowd.
I have a bunch you could check out as well--"The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon" (cast of 5+) is my most popular--you can read it here:
Or another, more obscure one one of my plays that fits your description would be Anna and August, you can read that one here:

I've got a couple of one acts that have found success at the college level -
Tuna Fish Eulogy is a great challenge for actors, the format is a ladder play with the text running top to bottom instead of left to write. http://www.theatrefolk.com/products/play/29-tuna-fish-eulogy I would also suggest Emotional Baggage. http://www.theatrefolk.com/products/play/32-emotional-baggage Good luck with your search! Check out the one-act plays of David Ives.
I've seen his "Words Words Words" done with college students and it's WONDERFUL. Very funny - and it's a director's dream...lots of creative input possible. Many MANY of his plays are successful at festival venues. |
