Topic: Plays for Youth..

Hey everyone,

I help to run a "youth" program within our group. We've typically done shows that I've thrown together and looking mostly "skit" ish. These kids are fantastic, and we even managed a full 60 minute production (also written in house). This year we're trying an MTI Disney musical, but they are quite pricey. Any other suggestions on titles for shows that can incorporate kids from age 7 through to age 12 (without making the older ones feel they are putting on "kids stuff") ??

Take a look here. There are plenty of scripts, but you will have to look carefully for the right balance of parts. Personally, I would look for scripts to suit the older end of the age range, then see if you can find parts appropriate to your youngsters. (For longer shows, take a look at "A Grimm Night for Hans Christian Andersen" which comes in Musical and non-musical versions.)

well, these are both from MTI-- but they were absolutely fabulous productions: Dear Edwina, Jr. and Honk! Jr.

Dear Edwina is a fairly easy musical score, and it highlights lots of actors. I would say Honk is much more complicated, but the payoff if big because it's a solid show. We just closed last week and it was a huge success. We produced Dear Edwina last year, and the kids just had a ball-- the songs are so catchy and fun.

Have you checked out 'Playscripts.com' they have awesome plays and you can read a bit of each one online so you know what you think before you buy =)

Just following up.. on this thread..

We opted to license "Honk Jr." from MTI. It's pricey, but having just completed another of the Stiles & Drewe musicals in our regular (adult) season, I think it's a wise choice. A little worried that I might have bitten

off more than I can chew, as there's a lot more solo work here than our previous "Disney Kids" production. I'm just about done with the casting, which has been a huge task as I try to balance out the strengths of the kids, versus their desires for stardom.

And so... it begins....
