bullet Topic: Need One Act Play!
    Posted: 8/12/08 at 10:33pm

My High School is planning on doing an evening of one-act plays in the spring.  We are just getting our theatre program on it's feet, so we have no theatre space at all, chances are we will be doing this in our cafeteria or meeting hall space. Our school is the type where football comes first then other sports, then theatre.  (We're trying to get in on the black-box theatre at our civic theatre, though we highly doubt the school going for that one.)

Anyway, some of us are getting the chance to direct and design (scenic and costume) our own one-act play. I need a one act that meets the following criteria,
  • Small Cast (I would say no more than 6, more girls than boys.)
  • East Acting (Most of these kids don't have acting experience.)
  • Preferbaly no deep dramatic pieces (I would love to direct something like this, but probably no one else! Smile )

Have a look through the list here - there may be something that catches your eye, and you can read the full texts on-line. (There is actually one - after school special - set in a High School cafeteria.)

Some of the one acts that I have directed and know the high school kids enjoy doing are: This is a Test by Stephen Gregg, Competition Piece by John Wells, Sally and Sam, Final Dress Rehearsal and Once Upon a Playground by Jack Frakes, Cinderella Wore Combat Boots and my list goes on and on.

How long do you have before the play goes on? It may be great to have the students write the play themselves. If you don't have that much time Baker Plays is a great resource.

I second the notion of having at least ONE student penned piece!

Without actors, a techie is a person with a list of marketable skills.
Without techies, an actor is just a goof, emoting alone in the dark.

Okay, so I've decided on "Around the World in 80 Days" By: Mark Brown, published by Dramatic Publishing.  It runs over 2 hours, so I've cut it down, and gotten it approved by the publisher.

Have any of you out there worked on this show?  Any tips?  Staging ideas?

As far as an update on our evening,  another kid will be directing The Wrestling Season (pending Administration approval).  And we haven't decided on our last play, it may be a student written piece.

Hi. I have been directing one acts for quite awhile, and have ordered hundreds of them...mostly bad. But the ones that have been the most fun are:

A Mad Breakfast
Anybody for Tea (have a boy play Birdie)
Almost the Bride of Dracula
Prime Time Crime
Ladies of the Mop
Fiendish Firebug Strikes Again (we had a building that looked like it was on fire using fans, lights and that silk fabric)

Break a Leg
