If she is suppossed to bring a musical piece to audition with, be sure to bring the sheet music. An accapella audition only lets me hear you. A piece with accompaniment shows you can follow the rythm and keep in key (or not). Any simple song with sheet music will do.

She is supposted to bring sheet music. She is thinking "American Tears". She had a solo part (verse and chorus) last spring in her school's patriotic program.
The only thing is there is a popular pop song today that she would rather sing. She can REALLY belt that one out and roll her voice. I told her she needs to stick with something more toned down, reserrved. What do you think? Abby

I always tell auditoners to do something that they know well and shows off their voice. For example if you have a great belt then do a song that will show off your belt. On the otherhand if you have amazing high notes then do a song that shows off your high notes. You want the director to see the best of what you can you do. For first time auditioners it is not always wise to learn something new just for the audition unless you have plenty of time to practice. Most people are usually very nervous. I have seen more then one person panic during a vocal audition. It is good idea to do something that you are very comfortable with.
Tell her good luck, have fun, and remember that the people who are doing the auditioning are routing for her to do well.

Agree, Agree, Agree... But let me add just one thing. This is not saying that they won't get a part if they do this, but just like the accapella coment, I suggest, that while still trying to do something you know cold and shows off your best voice, avoid church songs, happy birthday, God bless America and anything that makes you sound like Britiney or Shania.. Unless requested, don't do one from the show, but I do recomend some kind of show tune with similar qualities to the songs in the show..
Just one directors opinion... hope it helps.

Just one more thing to add to what Marty said. I totally agree that you should do something similar to the style of the show but PLEASE !! Don't select something really difficult unless you know you can do it well. I am never impressed by the difficuly of the piece. I am much more interested in the quality of the voice.
Best of luck to you in your audition.
