Those of you who have done this show, where do you obtain the beauty salon equipment / furnishings? Do you borrow them or find a place that will rent them? What about running water on stage for the hair washings? I am directing this show next fall and any tips you have or trouble shooting you can do for me will be much appreciated.

When we did the show we borrowed the stuff we needed from a local beauty supply store. Remeber this isn't a big fancy salon in the show so you can get away with using a lot of standard house type furniture and jsut get a few key pieces of real salon items, like chairs and hair dryers.
As for water, if you don't have a water supply you can easily tap into near you stage (which we didn't) you can build a water tower. Take something like a five gallon bucket and put it up on support structure so it's higher then the faucets on the sink. Connect the bucket to the faucet with some plumbing fittings, PVC pipe, and or a section of garden hose. Fill the bucket at the beggining of the show and it will gravity feed when they turn on the faucet. Another bucket under the drain in the sink catched the waste water. Simple and effective. Dan |

We were able to borrow an old reclining chair and a couple of hair-dryers. Older-looking chairs (in Harvest Gold, for example) are really perfect for Truvy's place.
We managed to avoid running water. Shelby's hair was in rollers, so that Truvy could take them out and style the hair on stage, but if you read the script carefully, there's no need to wash on stage. Could have a sink on set just for appearances, though. |

I have done this show twice; once as technical director and once as the director. Look to see if there is a beauty supply warehouse in your area. The place that I found had a huge warehouse with all kinds of used furniture and supplies from the area's beauty salons. All of it was out of date and shop worn.It was perfect for Truvy's Salon. There were hundreds of things to choose from and the set was jammed packed with all kinds of visual goodies. I asked my own hairdresser and she gave me the information I needed.I also contacted the local cosmetology school for consumable products; hairspray and those little paper things that are used for a real hair set. If you can arrange to have running water on the set do it. It makes those comedic moments with M'Lynn and Annelle absolutely wonderful. I have done it two seperate ways dictated by the theaters I was in. Once I used water pump that you can find in a garden supply store. The other time I ran a hose from the backstage faucet to the sink. Both times I asked around until I found someone who knew enough about plumbing to make sure that we had everything hooked up to the sink so that it wouldn't leak. Good luck.

Thanks, Linda. That is exactly the type of information I was hoping to find. Do you have photos of your productions that are posted somewhere on the web? This production is about 11 months away, but it will feel good to get some points nailed down.

Unfortunately, neither one of the websites has a good picture of the set. One of them is just getting up and running, if I can get a picture of the set on that website (www.ohmpaa.org )I will let you know. Take a look at ( www.schoolhousearts.org ) click on performances then past productions. There is some text, the poster and a couple of photos, but they are of the actors. This set was really cool, my designer brought in a huge old oak tree in 3 pieces, reassembled it with the help of her friend who builds bridges and draped it with moss. It really gave the set a southern feel.
