Are you including musicals?

If not, I think there would be some more Neil Simon titles that would score higher than Proof if you're just talking about the general public.

I don't know, you might be right. I didn't catch that you were actually looking for a show to produce. There are lots of other folks here who know more than I do. Some time ago I know I saw a list here of the most produced plays in community theater, might have been from the AACT but I can't seem to find it now. In choosing our last show I looked here and then just googled "community theater" and started looking at what other theaters were doing and what they had done in past seasons. If you're looking just for name recognition once again I would guess Neil Simon is one of the safer bets. They recently doubled the royalties so obviously somebody is voting with their pocketbook. I directed the Odd Couple several years ago and in retrospect I'm not sure that script has aged all that well, but we did good box office.

You are right - it doesn't necessarily mean "most bankable" etc. - I'm just trying to think of the list of shows that Average Joe Theater Goer who goes to a show once a year (maybe twice) and if he (or she) were to see a title, they would know it.

If there is such a thing as an "Average Joe Theater Goer" I'd say he or she is at least 65 years old which is one variable to take into account.
