bullet Topic: Show for Teenagers
    Posted: 3/04/08 at 8:53pm
I'm glad I stumbled across this website.  I've loved looking at everything so far and hope to really get involved.  In the meantime I actually have a question as well.....

I'm looking for a drama or comedy, non-musical that a cast of teenagers can have fun with. So far I've only been able to think of God's Favorite by Neil Simon.

Any help is appreciated.

A couple of questions:

How many kids do you have?

Are you looking to just have fun with the kids or do you want something really challenging? I just finished a production of Black Snow, by Keith Reddin which was a blast for a cast of 33, but I would consider it pretty difficult material for teenagers.

Neil Simon is always a good bet, but I'd look at Fools, Lost in Yonkers, or Brighton Beach Memoirs before God's Favorite.

Then there's Larry Shue, of course, The Nerd and The Foreigner are great comedies.

And, for self-horn tooting, I have a number of plays which are geared toward the teenage mind. Actually, if you google the phrase "plays for teenagers" you come up with my site first. I'd be happy to recommend some if you'd like.

When I was in high school we did a edgy show called "Voices from the High School".  It was pretty contemporary for the 80's.  It might translate to now.

Neil Simons "Rumors" is also good.

For a little Drama you could try "Up the Down Staircase"

Teenagers are really amazing....they will rise to your level of expectation....I have done everything from "Bang, Bang, You're Dead" to "Tartuffe" with teenagers and they love it all, if you guide them to the heart of the play and give them the tools to bring it to life.
A few other suggestions: "Dark of the Moon" is VERY cool...."Our Town" is never out of date, "To Kill a Mockingbird" is wonderful for many reasons...and they love ANYTHING by Christopher Durang or David Ives....
