Topic: Awards Selection Process for CT Posted: 2/06/08 at 2:49pm |
Hi,
I was looking for some feedback or suggestions on how best to handle an small award selection process for a community theatre.
Thinking just the basics .. best actor/actress, supporting actor/actress.
How to vote? Who should vote? anything of that sort, haven't been able to find any conversations on the topic.
What do you do?

I would suggest going to www.emact.org. We have an association of community theatres that participate in a Tony Awards like program called DASH. Not sure if this what you're looking for but it might be a good place to start and there is contact info for the organization on thier web site. |

Our theatre uses three outside adjudicators who come in, watch all 5-7 shows of the season, then decide on the awards. We call ours Golden Gizmos and they are presented at our annual banquet at the end of the season. We don't use the term "best" instead going with "Excellence in..." or "Outstanding in....." This way we can give credit to those who deserve it without the "best" implication that other people are less than appreciated. It is always interesting to see what these outside people think of the shows we put on. Sometimes we agree ametimes we wonder if they had been drinking prior to the show (or maybe even during), but it's always a fun evening.

With my mob I have avioded these annual gong afairs!
Mainly because of the fall out that come from them & those that miss out.
Over the years I have seen some real cat fights take place, with skin & hair flying, over a petty award that has next to no value.
As previously suggested I rather see a fun recognision award, than the best of the what ever.
Something rediculous as 'best dummy spit'' or 'biggest stuff up', being more apropriate.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.
People that take awards too seriously at the Community Theatre level have bigger problems ... in my opinion.
But I do feel the recognition is something special and it is a great chance to get everyone together and honor your history.

I agree, however there a number of characters around here, who adertise themselves as award winning Directoprs, Actors, Designers & what not.
I would find difficult to give them house room, let alone a production or part there in.
I realise eventualy they will run out of theatre groups to pester.
But is this what we are about?
