Just a quick question. Any one done this show? What did you do use for the switch blade knives? Any ideas on how to stab them into the table, without actually putting a hole in the table?

Our tactic is the easiest. We used switchblade knives and stabbed them into the table. Switchblades are easiliy obtained at any fleamarket and we built a table top for the show knowing we were going to stab it.

Cor blimey!
Besides being tottaly logical patrick.
I think I'd have a lot of reservations letting a warm prop loose with a real 'Flick Knife'!
But I suppose if one can pick them up so readily why not?
I know they were banned in Britain back in the 50's because of the 'Teddy Boys' & here in the 60's with the 'Bodgies & Widgies - but after all I shouldn't be surprised as it is America,

They're also illegal in America - or at least in parts of it - I know they're banned in my state.

This is what we used--you can get prop switchblades that when they open up they are actually combs---file off the teeth of the comb--then we piled law books on the table and attached a piece of styrofoam to the table with the books surrounding the foam. When he threw the knife down it stuck in the styrofoam and protruded above the books. We did this in a black box theater in the round with the audience only four or five feet away--and it worked really, really well. |

Buy more than one of these switchblade/comb knives. They are very cheap and can easily break. We bought two and were thankful that we did

Imar that is a good idea and just might work. We don't have the time to build a table at the moment no place to build it and will have very limited time in our scene shop and stage before the show.
Yes switch blades are illigal here too. Even if they weren't I am not comfortable giving high school students real knives. I used a real pocket knife in another show and never saw it again. I was unsure how "real" a prop one would work. Thanks
