bullet Topic: Rounding Third - VAN PROP/SET PIECE
    Posted: 10/08/07 at 4:16pm
We're planning on doing "Rounding Third" during the 2008 season. One scene takes place in the back of a van during a rain storm. I saw the "traveling" production of this last year and they literally had the back-half of a full sized Dodge van mounted on a rolling platform (with working back-up and brake lights).
I'm wondering if anyone out there has done "Rounding Third" and how they went about re-creating a van on-stage.
Any suggestions or comments will be greatly appreciated.
Cordially,

Why yes we have!.. .had a great time as Don a couple of years back... We went to the local junk yard, and cut about a foot of the rear end of an old van off with a torch...  We had the doors, the lights, the bumper and enough "side" to attach some plywood and curtains... it was pointed up stage left so only the door section really showed.. when the doors were open, we had mocked up the back of a "seat" with all of dons clothes strewn over it... add a box of trophy's a few cookies and it was good to go.  We just had it stay on through out and played it in light zones... The audience obviously the field and the team, down center "the bench", and to complete the picture, up stage right was a back stop and fence.  Worked well... and everyone loved it..

I saw a production done at a local college last year, and they used a white sheet.

And a digital projector to rear-project their various "sets" onto said sheet.

It worked very well, and allowed them to do the show in next to no space with next to no budget.    It also gave them something to project various baseball-related photos on before the show, during costume changes and at intermission.  Very clever, I thought.
