Has anyone done Into the Woods jr. edition? How long is it? Did it go over well? Is there anything...ummm...inappropriate in it...y'know like adult humor. I noticed the full script is rated PG and the jr. is rated G.
We are looking for a good musical to pull together in about 8-10 weeks. We are entering a new venue as far as location and NON PROFIT status but they already advertised this time period so...... Any suggestions? Oh...this is advertised for teens. THANKS |

What age group are you performing for?
If you're marketing for teens, with teen actors (and by teen I think middle and high school age), I'd think the PG version would be more than fine. There's nothing all that terribly adult in Into the Woods--hundreds of high schools have done it.
I've never seen the G version, but if teenagers can't handle PG material, I don't know what's going on in the world. (Especially as my middle school students flock to each horror/slasher/torture flick that comes out--I think they can handle the Big Bad Wolf.)

from what i remember, into the woods jr. is basically just the first act of the show, ending with the "happy ending" that normally leaves off at intermission. the second act is after the "happily ever after" and the real ending is more bittersweet. personally i like the real one better.
anyways the thing that would make it PG instead of G would be "moment in the woods" which is perfectly fine for high school kids and most middle schoolers... as long as you have two kids for that song, it'll be fine
what jr. shows basically do is that they shorten the script, take out any adult humor, and change the songs so they're easier to sing (in keys that are good for middle school voices, less harmony, etc).
if you know what kind of talent you'll be working with, and you think they could handle the real one, i would go for that

It's Sondheim--so you better have an excellent music director (vocal and pit) and people with great ears. |
