Topic: inexpensive styrofoam panels for sets Posted: 6/28/07 at 8:54pm |
I am two weeks away from a Vacation Bible School opening date and find that the suggested styrofoam panels for my sets are $25 at Home Depot! Is there an inexpensive supplier to something that is less permanent and less expensive? I just need for them to hold up five days as a village in the Holy Land. I'm hoping I don't have to cut plywood and it can't be very cheap either. Help!

How about good old fashioned card board? Pick up some refrig boxes at an appliance store. Don't worry that it is too "cheap" or too "juvenile". There are respectable community theatres that use card board for set pieces. Check out the cardboard king's website! There are also books by James Hull Miller (a wonderful man that I had the privilege of taking a class from in college in the 70's) on self supporting scenery. He has wonderful ideas and staged a lot of theatre in churches.

G'day!
Check out your liability of using styrofoam &/or cardboard, in regards to fire risk!
Possibly Masonite (Burnie board] or another material hard board that can be fire proofed by applying a retardant. like MDF - frankly why no t just soft flats with header profiles?
I used cardboard when I worked on TV sets, but fire proofing was never worked.
Having experianced a number of fires, I found sheet cardboard is a better product in a fire. It is not as toxic & it tends to fuel out quicker than styrofoam, which perpetuates it's own flame.
(It's the smoke that kills)
