Hi Guys, want an opinion on the musical Dames At Sea for our high school show next spring. Has anyone out there done this show? (Sounds like a dumb question) What are your thoughts? Right now I am toying between Dames At Sea and Throughly Modern Millie. I know they are different in difficulty, but kind of have the same story line. I guess the deal is, I am wanting something that is NOT going to leave me unable to function, but I also want to do a top notch production that will draw a crowd. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Alice

I'm not familiar with Dames at Sea, but my high school did Thoroughly Modern Millie this year and it was incredible (if I do say so, myself.)
TMM has a fairly high degree of difficulty, lots of sets, supertitles, tap dancing. We started giving our kids tap dancing lessons in the fall so they would be ready for a January production. We also had a few outstanding kids who will probably be professionals some day, so we had the talent to do the show justice.
Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable experience. From what I know, I don't believe Dames at Sea is as strong a show or will draw the same kind of audience.

I love "Dames at Sea" - when I was younger, I played Dick ... and I've directed and choreographed it twice.
It's always a big hit - those audiences just love all that tap dancing LOL. There are HUGE differences between "Dames at Sea" and "Thoroughly Modern MIllie" - in addition to the sets, costumes, orchestra, etc, there is a huge cast in "TMM" and only seven people in "Dames at Sea." I've seen a small chorus added to the final number in "Dames"...but it doesn't really work - in fact, sort of spoils the fun of having a 'huge' finale with seven people. I believe the script and score for "Dames" is much livelier and more fun than "TMM" - in fact, the show itself has a tighter and funnier book. But, of course, it's not as famous as "TMM." If you require a big 'name' show to bring in audiences, "Dames" is probably not for you. Luckily, LOL, our school shows fill up, no matter WHAT the show is. |
