Getting boys into audition is always difficult (see previous posts), but I think it's now become even harder. I've just learned that the only boy from my last production is not auditioning for my next show ... perhaps never again ... because of some ribbing he received from his "friends" about being in a play. (Nice friends, eh?) I'm dropping my age minimum back to 8 and offering an audition workshop this summer hoping to entice more fellas into the program, but I fear I'm going to loose one of my most promising youngsters all because of the teasing he received from his classmates (Catholic school), other scouts, and neighborhood friends.
Any words of advice/encouragement?

it's an unfortunate situation for younger guys, but they usually change their minds (and their "friends" change their tune) when they realize that the theater is full of girls who find the confidence to be on stage very attractive.

This is very true, unfortunately it happens about the same time the kids get jobs / or are involved in High School sports. When we did Grease (Spring 06) the boys came out of the workwork to be in the show. They willingly balanced baseball and rehearsals. Because it was a "cool" show. That doesn't happen for other shows. I am gearing up for my annual High School Drama workshop, we are doing High School Musical, and the numbers I have are 11 boys and 33 girls. Pretty standard for the last 10 years I have been doing it. It is almost always 3/1 ratio girls/boys. Never enough talented boys, and always too many talented girls.

I wonder where these young boys think the cool, popular young movie actors (whoever they are this year) come from!

Ahh but you make the assumption that they do think about this. These are the kind of kids that wish they were these people but have no idea of what initiative it takes to be those people (even if is just being famous for being famous).

Life is life. Boys will be boys. That's what boys do. We find soft spots on our friends and go in for the kill. I however learned at an early age that many times in the theatre I had to change in the same area as the girls. That bright ray of hope has kept me coming back for over twenty years

suzecue - I was just about to say the same thing =) I got 6 - count 'em 6 boys this year because we did Grease - woo hoo. I am hoping they will stick around because they had so much fun. Next year I am thinking of doing Willy Wonka because since Johnny Depp did it it's pretty popular too =)

On the unisex dressiing rooms, which is the norm in most theatres. Now & then a 'modesty curtain' appears, but funnily enough I have found it is utalised more by the blokes. than the birds?
The mystery for me evaporated way back in the 50's - these days there is a lot more to be seen at the beach!
However I agree with suzcue if can you snaffle them, when they perceive they are all grown up, because they have gained a job &/or a driver licence. Is about the best time to get them hooked for life - besides the draw card of the fairer gender of course, which is always an added bonus!
