Maybe I should just email Jeff since his program is where I noticed it...
Has anybody done the musical HONK!? If so, are we talking a very young cast, teens, or adults FOR kids? I have never heard of the thing before seeing it mentioned in the bios of some of the cast of HSM this past weekend. If it could be done with teens, instead of "little" kids, that would be great. Maybe it is more popular than I realize, so looking for some insights. It is another MTI show I see from their site, too. |

Honk is a fantastic musical. Our theatre did it last year. Our cast consisted mostly of adults ranging from 18 to sixty-ish. The ducklings were played by juveniles 12-17. The music is fun and playful. We work fairly closely with one of the rural High Schools in our area and they did the show about a month after we did. This worked out great for both of us. When our show closed, we took the entire set down and set it back up at the school. We were also able to give them almost all the costumes needed. This show is so very flexible in terms of cast size and ages. It can be done with a small cast doing two or three parts each or a larger single part cast. I've seen it costumed several different ways from human costumes with animal suggestions to full animal costumes. It's just my opinion but the mostly human costumes looked best to me. I had the opportunity to play the vile cat. I had a zoot suit, handlebar mustache for whiskers and ofcourse a tail with a mind of its own. Once again I love this show.

HONK is not just a "kids" show. It is a great family musical. The characters are so much fun and the music is great.

I would second Pdavis and put an exclamation point on slick... It is NOT a kids show... It could be played that way, but whether you are playing for the story book crowd or milking all the humor you can out of it for a more adult audience.. it is best played by adults.. and adults will love it.!

Thanks - will definitely look into it for next-next season. I've never even heard of the songs. Maybe a YouTube search is in order!

trutter--
I'm in rehearsals as Ugly in HONK! right now (well, I'll be in rehearsals for it in about 45 min). It's a great family show that can be cast however you choose. The original West End production was done with a cast of 8 adults and 4 kids (12 yrs old or so). The kids and 3 leads (Ugly, Ida and Cat) did not double..but the other 5 adults did. We're doing this show with a cast of about 40--including 17 adults and the rest kids. Adults cast in all of the major speaking roles, kids as the 4 speaking ducklings and then everyone else performs in a variety of ensemble roles (fish, water, geese, froglets, etc). I can't say this enough--It's a GREAT family show--fun for kids AND adults. THe music is fairly basic but covers a large spectrum of musical styles. Beware if you're searching Youtube-there's some pretty scary productions out there. You'll be able to pick them out pretty easily. |
