Here in the Kansas City area, it depends on the theatre. One of the outdoor theatres in the area pay choreographers, directors, music directors, stage managers, and props people. Another theatre in the area don't pay anyone. There's an article in a prior KC Stage Magazine you can read ( How to Succeed in Community Theatre and Get Paid for It ) that basically states it depends on the budget . Anywhere from $0 to $650 is the listing for choreographer. |

We are a small town CT with membership of 100 or so. We have always paid for our summer musicals Director 600, orchestra director 500, choral director 150, choreographer 100. This seems to fit in our budget the best... as a Summer Musical director I have taken a lower amount to accomodate a choregrapher that traveled to participate...we try to make everyone feel that their contribution is important. Our orchestra leader is the only one that has stayed firm with his 500 and won't take less. Although, we never have to worry about finding a tuba player, it is his responsibilty and his work for the $$ he asked for. For all other performances our comedy, drama, and youth we only pay the set designer and construction person 300. I say only because what they do is worth so much more, but as a small CT that is all we have to give. It is more of a gesture for their work rather than to get rich. We love the arts and it is amazing how many people in a small community will come out for auditions.

$250 - $750 for HS productions, $750 - $1200 for community theatre for me. Sometimes I do gratis work, but rarely.
The best choreographers SHOULD be able to read the musical score - no soundtrack I know has the COMPLETE score - and be able to interpret the style and period and coming up with appropriate movement for a variety of dancers/non dancers. You need to be able to teach them all and make them look great on the stage. I sometimes spend two days studying and choreographing (writing) one song to get it just right for the cast. This means I spend a lot of time on your show before I do the first choreography rehearsal.
If you are paying your director, music director, light and set designer, you should pay your choreographer!
