bullet Topic: Set Design Sharing
    Posted: 5/03/07 at 12:28am
I am the residant carpenter at a community theatre that does 10 shows a year. Volunteer Set Designers are very hard to find so occasionally it falls on me to do the design. I have a fair bit of experience on interior sets but I have difficulty with exterior or abstract.
I am wondering how the forum feels about sharing set designs. I'm not looking to make exact copies of someone else's design, but I'm hoping to get drawings or pictures on occasion for inspiration. When a script has nothing more than a description, yet no floor plan in the back, sometimes it's difficult to envision. Googling for pictures isn't always succesful.
That being said, I am trying to get some idea of how to approach the show "Out On A Limb" by Joyce Rayburn. This requires an exterior garage and house with a partial interior house, all in one setting. Would anyone be willing to point me to their own theatre's website or know of a webpage where I might find a picture of the set?
Thanks!
Metro Carpenter

Here is a quick and badly put together idea I had.  This is the first time I used sketchup, but this hopefully gives you an idea for your set.

If you have other needs, I'll try to do a better on this, this was the only way I could upload the design I had, so sorry about the low level design.

That would be such a great help to small groups that are always so short on volunteers that everyone is doing about 3 jobs.  Our best actress is also our best director and our best scene designer and costumer.  She would love a break from a couple of those jobs.

Thank you biggertigger for your response. I really appreciate the effort you put into doing a drawing for me. I'm afraid I'm looking for something with more detail, though. By the way, is this a design you've used in the past for the actual show or is it based on my description? Just wondering.
Anyway, I must admit I find photos are ideal because it's nice to see the final product and then I can figure out how to get there. Usually I'll google a show and get photos from several versions of the same production to get a better understanding of what design elements are required, then make my own design. Unfortunately "Out On A Limb" is proving to be rather elusive.

Metrocarpenter, I would be happy to help design your set. I can give very detailed renderings to help you visualize what to build.
I am not familiar with the play, so if you want to contact me to give more information, especially the size of the space you have to work with, feel free.

This was based on your discription of what you needed.  That was the first time I had worked with sketchup, (which is not the easiest product to work with).  I do have a quick drawn sketch that had a lot of detail, i.e. porch lights, shrubbery, furniture, fencing, ect.  Unfortunately, I can't seem to upload my design to post here.
Basically what is posted is just giving you an idea, based on you limited description, to give you ideas on which way you can go.
Did you need a garage door that had to open or not?  If so you may want to use more of a barn door idea instead of over head door which can be a huge expense to do.

Thanks for the offers. I am part way through reading the play. When I'm finished I'll post a better description. Rather than use my personal email account, I can open a new one on yahoo so your ideas can be sent to me more directly. Is this allowed? If it is I'll post again in a day or two. Much appreciated. Ah! Nevermind... I just discovered the "Private Message" link at the top of the page. That must be what you mean.
