The Land is a newplay by Jessica Litwak, a U.S. playwright, with Amiral-Azraki, an Iraqi playwright.The first script collaboratively developed by U.S. and Iraqi theater artists, TheLand is being workshopped as part of the development of the work towardfuture full productions. The play is based on an idea by Litwak and al-Azraki.

The story for The Land merges the fantastic and the realistic as itmoves across time and geography and traverses the worlds of the living and thedead. It is a tragicomedy about two soldiers, one from Iraq and one from theU.S. Although both have been killed, they come to see the horror and humor oftheir lives while a gravedigger poet buries them. As the gravedigger rushesthrough his job, they go over their lives, from history to religion to thewomen they love and will miss. They come to a reconciliation and are motivatedto make peace in the afterlife. Meanwhile, their mothers, on opposite sides ofthe world, come to terms with sorrow, rage, and regret. They meet years laterto ask each other: Is understanding possible? Is forgiveness possible? Ispeace?

The Land, part of the overall“Tamziq: Scattered and Connected” project, is being developed by FortPoint Theater Channel (FPTC) in conjunction with the Odysseus Project (www.odysseusproject.org)and the William Joiner Center for the Study of War and Social Consequences(www.umb.edu/joinercenter).“Tamziq” means torn in Arabic and this multifaceted project serves as a conversationin art by Middle Eastern and American artists. Anne Loyer, director of the Odysseus Project and a member of the FortPoint Theatre Channel’s (FPTC) artistic board, has organized and co-curated the“Tamziq” project, which is currently presenting the “Tamziq” exhibition at theArsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown, MA. The Fort Point Arts Community(FPAC) and FPTC are supporting partners in this exhibit. Loyer conceived“Tamziq” to create opportunities for dialogue and exchange with and within twocommunities: Iraqi refugees resettling in Massachusetts and U.S. veteransreturning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

FPTC’s workshop production of The Land features AhmadMaksoud as the gravedigger, Lisa Caron Driscoll as an Iraqi mother,Michael Dwan Singh as her son, an Iraqi freedom fighter, Sally Nutt as an American mother, and WilkinsonTheodoris as her son, an American soldier.

Come celebrate Up and Coming Theatre’s 20th Anniversary and AUDITION for:

Jesus Christ Superstar


Auditions will be held on Monday May 13th and Wednesday, May 15th from 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. at the Palatine Park District building at 250 E. Wood Street, Palatine, IL 60067. We will be located in rooms 1B and 1C. No appointment is necessary, but please arrive no later than 9:30 p.m.

Please prepare 32 bars of a song that shows your vocal ability. We are seeking unique and different voices like rock, country, vocal jazz, pop, musical theater, punk, and more! An accompanist will be provided so bring sheet music in the key you will be singing. A dance call will be part of your audition. Please dress comfortably, have appropriate footwear and be prepared to move. We are seeking people who dance different styles like breakdancing, jazz, gymnastics, tumblers,tappers, and more. We are also looking for a Military Drill Sergeant who can do authentic military drills and calls. If you have a special talent, don't be shy, come and show us!

Call backs will be invitation only, Thursday, May 16th from 7:00 p.m – 10:00 p.m. We are looking for men AND women to fill principal and ensemble roles.

Rehearsals for this production will be held in Rolling Meadows - Monday thru Thursday evenings, the end of May through August show dates. Performances will be held August 2, 3, and 4 (with the possibility of a one weekend extension) at Lake Zurich Performing Arts Center in Lake Zurich, IL. Produced by: Lindsey Weiss.

We are pleased to introduce our directors: Michael Gillis and Jorge Bermudez. We are thrilled to have such a talented duo.
MICHAEL GILLIS is thrilled to be returning to Up and Coming Theater where he made his start as an actor 17 years ago as Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Since then he has travelled the world on National tours of: The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber starring Michael Bolton, Pirates of Penzance as Frederick, and Phantom of the Opera as Raoul. He has also performed in the International tours of Jesus Christ Superstar as Jesus and Tony in West Side Story. Regionally, he has starred at Marriott Lincolnshire, George Street Playhouse, Lyric Theater of Oklahoma, and Gateway Playhouse. Mike is overjoyed to be taking on a different role in his second go-around with Up and Coming Theatre!

JORGE BERMUDEZ is a founding member of Up and Coming Theatre Company and is currently serving as the President. Over the past 20 years he has directed some of our most successful productions (including: A Chorus Line, West Side Story, Fiddler On The Roof, Disney's High School Musical, and Miss Saigon). His last effort with us was our 2009 production of Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in which UAC earned the Illinois Theatre Association's Award of Excellence - Community Theatre Division. In addition to his work with Up and Coming, Jorge has worked with Footlighter's Youth Theatre Program, served on the Highland Park Players Board of Directors, as well as directed for numerous productions around the Chicagoland area. In 2010, he was given the "Outstanding Direction" Award by the American Association of Community Theatre Illinois State Festival Committee for a production of Disney's Alice In Wonderland Jr. Last summer, Jorge interned with Way Off Broadway, Inc., Iowa's only professional musical theatre company. There, he pulled double duty as he served as Assistant Director as well as performer for professional productions of The Music Man and also The Wizard of Oz where he played Oz. After 15 years of working as an HR professional, he has decided to pursue his passion and is currently an MFA Candidate in Theatre Pedagogy at Virginia Commonwealth University where he enjoys serving as an Adjunct Professor teaching courses in Acting and Speech.

We are also thrilled to welcome back Jennifer Cupani as this summer's choreographer! Jennifer is a dance educator, choreographer and director. She is excited to return to Up and Coming Theatre (UAC) for their 20th anniversary production! Previous productions with UAC Include: Miss Saigon (choreographer), The Producers (choreographer) and HAIRSPRAY (Director/Choreographer).Her 15 year career as a director and choreographer encompasses over 50 dance and theatre productions, music videos, and film. Other highlights include: 42nd Street (Choreographer) and Queen’s rock musical, We Will Rock You (Choreographer) . Jennifer has taught all ages and levels of dance, focusing on jazz, ballet, modern and contemporary dance. Her teaching career is highlighted by nine years at Saint Viator High School as dance teacher, musical choreographer and the Artistic Director of the Orchesis Dance Company. Currently, Jennifer teaches ballet, tap, lyrical and musical theatre jazz at Reverie Dance Academy in Buffalo Grove. Jennifer earned her B.A. in Public Relations and Spanish and attended the renowned Conservatory of Dance at Barat College on scholarship. At Barat, Jennifer studied choreography, composition and improvisation in addition to ballet with Rory Foster (American Ballet Theatre) and modern with Eileen Cropley (Paul Taylor Dance Co.). Jennifer is also a certified BeMoved Dance fitness instructor, trained by founder and creator Sherry Zunker (River North Dance Chicago).

Lastly, we are excited to welcome Chaz Williams-Ali to the Up and Coming family! Chaz will be music directing Jesus Christ Superstar this summer. Chaz’men Williams-Ali is a young tenor from St. Louis MO. He began singing as a child at Faith Miracle Temple church. There Chaz found early success being given the task of teaching the youth choir at a very young age. From there, Chaz attended Central Visual and Performing Arts High School and studied with two of St. Louis’ finest instructors, Dello Thedford, and Yvonne Crockett. While studying at Central, Chaz joined the Opera Theatre St. Louis Artist-in-Training program where he studied for two years. After high school, Chaz attended the University of Iowa and studied voice with Stephen Swanson and coached with the illustrious Shari Rhoads. While at the University of Iowa, Chaz starred in the leading roles of more than 6 operas. Those roles included Alfredo in Verdi's La Traviata , Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore and Romeo in Romeo et Juliette. During that time, he also played the role of Ferrando in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte in Milano, Italy. Also at the University of Iowa Theatre Department, Chaz was called upon to be the musical director for the world premiere of the new musical Boy in Black alongside the composer of that musical Dan Roeder. Chaz made his professional opera debut in 2008 in Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Gondoliers with Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre. He has returned there to participate in Aida and Madama Butterfly. Chaz was named the Grand Prize division winner in the 2009 National Association of the Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition. Chaz also continued to find success in the realm of musical theatre working on musicals like The Wizard of Oz, Orphan Train, and Forever Plaid: Plaid Tidings. In the summer of 2012, Chaz was the assistant musical director for Way Off Broadway , Iowa's only professional musical theatre company.

Wheaton Drama, Inc. (WDI) announces auditions for its 2012-2013 season closer, Into the Woods. This classic Stephen Sondheim/James Lapine musical examines the world of fairy tales in a way which is funny, dramatic and thought-provoking.  The original Broadway production won three Tony Awards, including Best Score and Best Book of a Musical.

 

Craig Gustafson is directing. Rebecca Poole is the production manager.  Music Director: Matthew McGrath.  Choreographer: Tracy Adams.  Assistant Directors: Stan Austin, Shahni Barstatis & Bruce Ebner.

Auditions are at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 16 at Playhouse 111, 111 N. Hale Street in downtown Wheaton.

 

In order to best utilize the time of actors auditioning for Into the Woods, auditions are by appointment only. The process is as follows:

 

1. Actors will be scheduled for Saturday, March 16.

2. Actors will be assigned a call time, either 2:00, 3:00 or 4:00 p.m.

3. Actors will be assigned to a group and will spend 20 minutes in the singing audition and 20 minutes in the reading audition.  There will be no dance audition; this is not a heavy dance show.  Everyone who attends will get to read.

4. Those cast or called back will be called by noon on Thursday. Actors who are not cast or called back will be contacted by e-mail. Callbacks (or further auditions, if needed) will be on Thursday, March 21.


To schedule an appointment: please email WDIWoods@comcast.net.  Please state your name and which day you would like to audition.  Attaching a headshot and resume is acceptable but is not required. Details on what you need to sing and read will be given to you when your appointment is scheduled.

Wheaton Drama, Inc (WDI) is presenting Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure. This exciting adaptation by Steven Dietz is based on the original play by William Gillette and Arthur Conan Doyle.    

The Wheaton Drama cast is Edward Barnett as Norton/Larrabee; Roy Birch as Sid Prince; Pat Daly as Policeman/Clergyman; Deven Ferber as Sherlock Holmes; Amy Johnson as Post Boy/Swiss Boy; Harold LeBoyer as Dr. Watson; Larry Mayo as Professor Moriarty; Karen Neidlinger as Madge Larrabee; Tom Viskocil as the King of Bohemia; Sharon Voss as Irene Adler.

Annie Walker-Bright is directing, assisted by Dee Hicks. The production manager is Steve Blount. Amy Johnson is the stage manager.

Additional production staff include: Ben Aylesworth (special effects & set decoration); Ken Beach (production photography); Alice Blount (properties); Brian Boylan (sound design); Pat Daly (set construction); Craig Gustafson (Starboard design); Melissa Heischberg (website); Jo-Ann Ledger (publicity); Steven Merkel (publicity photography); R.J. Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure is set in Victorian England in a tidy flat at 221B Baker Street and other locations. Audiences do not have to be detective story scholars to enjoy the script Steven Dietz has crafted—there is intrigue, adventure and humor, plus a touch of romance with the inclusion of Holmes’ intellectual equal, Irene Adler.  

Performances are January 25 through February 17, 2013 at Playhouse 111, 111 N. Hale Street in downtown Wheaton, IL. Shows are Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 3pm. Auditions for A Hatful of Rain.

This story of a young man who was terribly injured in the Korean War provides a look at drug addiction through the eyes of society in 1955, and how it can tear a family apart or bring them together. This emotional drama can be related to soldiers of today with PTSD.

Auditions will take place at Village Theatre, 2S720 Park Blvd., Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 (near the northwest corner of Park and Butterfield Rd.) They are scheduled for Sunday, January 20 at 2pm and Tuesday, January 22 at 7pm and call backs, if necessary, will be on Wednesday, January 23 at 7pm. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. The director strongly suggests those interested to read the script and be familiar with the play. Rehearsals will be 3-4 days a week based on cast availability. All characters are 1955 New York Italian, so must be willing to possibly change hair cut or color. A realistic New York dialect would be appreciated, but not required. The director is open to color blind casting as well. All shapes, sizes and ethnicities are welcome to audition.

Character Breakdown:

John Pope Sr.: 40-60. No nonsense, fairly absentee father of Johnny and Polo. Can be insulting and opinionated.
Johnny Pope: Late 20s-early 30s. A Korean War Vet who was severely injured and taken captive. He has developed a secret, but severe addiction to morphine.
Celia Pope: Mid to late 20s. Johnny's wife who is 4 months pregnant. She is a strong willed independent thinker who doesn't suffer fools.
Polo Pope: Mid to late 20s. Johnny's younger brother. Loves Johnny, doesn't know how to help him, so he gives him all his money to feed his habit. He is in love with Celia. Has spent most of his life trying to gain the approval and love of his father, to no avail.
Mother: 30-60. A collector/dealer for a drug ring. He is the ruthless brains of the trio. Heartless and seems to enjoy inflicting "punishments" on the junkies that can't pay up.
Apples: 19-30 Mother's "2nd in command". A slimy yes man.
Chuch: 20-40. Mother's muscle. A very big man, but under it all, can have a sensitive heart.
Putski: 20-40. A female morphine addict friend of the three goons. A small but fun part for an actress. Must be comfortable appearing as if naked, only wearing a rain coat. (This will be done as a tasteful illusion-no actual nudity will occur).

Wheaton Drama, Inc. (WDI) in downtown Wheaton, IL announces auditions for Full Circle. This World War II drama by Erich Maria Remarque (All Quiet on the Western Front) and Peter Stone (1776) has been forgotten since its original American production in the 1970s. Wheaton Drama is proud to present the revival of this gripping and moving story.

Set in Berlin at the end of World War II, a young woman and an escaped prisoner discover that sometimes there are more important things than just surviving. When a Gestapo Captain begins to suspect who they really are, the struggles between identity, love and responsibility threaten to overtake them all.

Full Circle is directed by Sean Ogren, assisted by Suzanne Ogren. The production manager is Amy Johnson. Elyse Willis is the stage manager.

Auditions are Sunday, January 27 and Monday, January 28 at 7pm at Wheaton Drama’s Playhouse 111, 111 N. Hale, Wheaton, IL 60187. Callbacks, if necessary, will be Tuesday, January 29 at 7:30pm. The first read-through is scheduled for January 30.

These are non-Equity auditions. There is no pay. All roles are open. Those cast will be required to pay a nominal fee for Wheaton Drama membership. Newcomers are welcomed and membership status does not affect casting.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

Please note that character age will be a secondary choice when considered alongside acting choices. German and Russian dialects will be required.

 

ANNA - 28 and attractive, but run down by five years of life in war. Believes that surviving is everything. Wary...but very, very smart.

 

ERIC ROHDE - Around 30, an escapee from a German prison. The charm, courage, and attraction of this man have been seriously tampered with; that these qualities are still alive and in evidence speaks well for the degree to which they existed before.

 

SCHMIDT - Early 30s, a captain in the Gestapo. He is a man of intelligence, wit, and some attractiveness. He is educated and articulate, but he is neither an intellectual nor a fanatic—merely an opportunist.

 

GRETE - 22, blonde, abundantly put-together. Naive. Concerned more about appearances than actions. Provides a fair amount of the play’s lighter moments.

 

KOERNER - Past 50, the janitor who has suddenly been promoted to the position of Block Warden. His expression is habitually stern, abetted somewhat by the severe way he combs his hair and the sterility of the steel-rimmed glasses he wears. Also an opportunist, but his pedantry keeps him from achieving anything worthwhile.

 

KATZ - Middle 50s, an escaped prisoner, Jewish. Will require some stage combat.  

 

RUSSIAN CAPTAIN - 32, slim and fair. He is well educated, speaks fluent German, and is very good - and very smart - at what he does.

 

MACK - In his middle 20s, a Gestapo man. Has allowed his constant disapproval of most things to distort his face into a perpetual sneer.

 

MAURER - 30-ish, another Gestapo man. Large and stupid. He rarely, if ever, speaks, but the acts of inhuman brutality that constitute his duty and his pleasure form the great equalizer. NOTE: Stage combat experience a plus.

 

RUSSIAN SERGEANT & RUSSIAN SOLDIER - Very similar in age and build to MACK & MAURER. Want to work with two actors to portray all four roles (and both dialects) if possible.  

Full Circle is performed March 15-April 7, 2013. Performances are at 8pm Thursdays-Saturdays and 3pm Sundays. Tickets are $13 for Thursdays and $16 Fridays-Sundays.

Hi. AUDITIONS this coming Saturday afternoon. You could have a lot of fun doing shows that are usually considered too risky for suburban theater. I’m directing Sister Mary Ignatius is Full of Cotton, consisting of:

• “A Simple Kind of Love Story” by Murray Schisgal – A young, flavor-of-the-month TV writer goes from top of the world to ignominy, failure and death in twenty minutes. A wild satire of show biz agents from the writer of “Luv” and “Tootsie”.
• “27 Wagons Full of Cotton” by Tennessee Williams – A sultry, Amazonian child-woman reaps what her husband sews when the husband (owner of a cotton mill) burns down the competition’s factory. A steamy, warped black comedy from the man who gave you “A Streetcar Named Desire”, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” and “The Glass Menagerie”.
• “Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You” by Christopher Durang – The mother lode of controversial plays. A very strict nun lectures the audience concerning catechism, then is visited by four of her ex-students, whose lives have been phenomenally screwed up as a result of her teaching.

This production is not for the delicate.

Performances of Sister Mary Ignatius is Full of Cotton are December 7–22. Shows are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 3:00 pm.

Craig Gustafson is directing. Bill Barry, Jr. is producing.

Auditions are at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, October 23 and noon on Saturday, October 27 at Vero Voce Theatre, 951 State Avenue, Suite F, St. Charles, IL. NOTE: Mapquest will guide you to State Street (Roosevelt Road). State Avenue is just off of Rt. 64 (North Avenue).

In order to best utilize the time of actors auditioning for Sister Mary Ignatius is Full of Cotton, auditions are by appointment only. The process is as follows:

1. Actors will be scheduled for either Tuesday, October 23 or Saturday, October 27 (actor's choice, unless a date is full).

2. Actors will be assigned a call time, either 7:00, 8:00 or 9:00 pm on Tuesday or 12:00, 1:00 or 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.

3. Auditions will consist of cold readings.

4. Those cast or called back will be called by 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 27. Actors who are not cast or called back will be contacted by e-mail.

5. Walk-ins might be seen beginning at 10:00 on Monday & Tuesday, depending on how busy auditions are, so having an appointment is advised.

Acorn Community Theatre announces open auditions for "The Hobbit" on September 4 and 6 from 6:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Warrenville Fire Station, 3s472 Batavia Road, Warrenville, IL.  Auditions are for age groups 6-18 and performances will be held 11/3, 11/4, 11/10 and 11/11 in Warrenville.
